Lauren Sparkman , CLS
Child Life Specialist

I am from the small town of Titusville, Florida. For those who are unfamiliar, Titusville is where the space shuttle is launched. Upon graduating from Titusville High School in 2002, I attended Auburn University located in Auburn, Alabama. I graduated in May 2007 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development and Family Studies with a concentration in Child Life.

As a Child Life Specialist, I work in a hospital setting to provide support for patients and families during hospitalization. Child Life Specialists assist with easing children’s fears and anxieties through the use of therapeutic, recreational activities, and preparation for medical procedures. We also consider the needs of the entire family, siblings, and/or others who may be affected by a child’s illness or trauma by providing them with the necessary support and education. In addition, we also provide support and distraction for children undergoing tests, surgeries, and other medical procedures.

I completed a Child Life internship at Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital located in Orlando, Florida. After completing this internship, I was hired at Miami Children’s Hospital as the Child Life Specialist on the 3 East/Respiratory unit.

My role at camp is to provide campers with developmentally appropriate therapeutic and recreational activities. This camp supports our Child Life philosophy of family centered care as we incorporate and encourage the whole family to participate. I was honored to be a part of VACC Camp 2008 and look forward to the years to come.
